Okay dimwit here but this is my first time growing Toms in a Grow bag. I have bought a giant levingtons grow bag and it says be careful not to pierce the bottom. What about drainage, do they not need any holes in them?

    Cheers EGW x

    hi elliegreenwellie

i am growing my toms in pots ,but was on the gardeners world site and i remembered it.
monty don reccomended you knead your growbag to get the compost loose ,then you stab the underneath for drainage, then you cut the circles out for your toms etc,
    i hope this helps

Last year were advised to insert plastic pots upright into the soil next to the plants. Then when watering you fill the empty pots and they gradually water the toms. Seemed to work OK.

ah yes the upside down bottle we done this last year also do the same for the pots to :), but the 2 toms i had in pots still done beta then the grow bag ones.

prefer doing them in pots as the toms get to heavy in the grow bags and are hard to keep upright with the canes, anyone have any beta methods for this?

I think the instructions I had on growbags last year were to pierce the edges of the bag so that water doesn't drain out instantly but can filter out if it gets too wet. Hope that helps!

You will probaly get better results if you put your plants into 8" pots and then plunge the pots a couple of inches into the growbag. Don't make holes in the bottom of the growbag. Toms are heavy drinkers as they get bigger (HIC!) and you will probably have a hard enough time keeping the compost moist anyway. You can put a cane through the bottom of the pot into the growbag to keep everything stable. I bought some heavy wire cane supports for using with growbags and they worked well last year and as minxycat says the upturned bottomless bottle is ideal for watering. You put the water in the upturned bottle and liquid feed into the pot with the toms, this stops the plant from getting waterlogged. I've spent a bit of money this year and bought some bottomless tomato pots to try. They are made of quite heavy plastic and at £20 for 6 are comparable in price to good quality large pots.
