Erm, pretty much as the title suggests! I'm looking for a 1.5m red acer for a small cottagey feel front garden centre piece... My only problem is the vast selection of acers available!

    Hi Loofah,

You'll be wanting something like an Acer palmatum 'atropurpurea' then. Keep it either potbound or regularly pruned and it should meet your requirements.

A.P. 'Atropurpureum' can grow to 15 metres
1.5 metres is not very tall. What about one of the lace leaf dissectums? 'Garnet' or 'Crimson Queen' would be suitable as regards height and are very beautiful plants
This is my own 'Garnet' after about 15 years, and it was a foot and a half tall when I bought it

For less than a tenner you couldn't be bad to that one :)

Oky poke, ordered that.... Now, its going into a large container (yet to be bought!) but what is the optimum compost and drainage scenario for the acer?

Well drained soil is essential, and it should be kept moist but never wet :)

Well... Ordered an Acer dissectum garnet from Morgan and Thomson well over a month ago. Have just chased them (been a busy bunny haven't I!) and apparently it was delivered on the 3rd of this month. Erm, but it wasn't! They can re order it but it won't be sent out until.... FEBRUARY!!! But they did give a full refund. Frankly I would have preferred the tree.

The Acer palmatum dissectum doesn't like wind. Personally I don't think that T&M's quality is brill, and I recommend you source a plant you can touch & feel, rather than mail order.

I agree with Kristen, Loofah, go to your local garden centre. You get to choose the plant then, not some, disinterested stranger.:thumb:

B&Q and even Tesco have some good bargains on cheap JM's at the moment. They are seldom named varieties but they look very similar anyways :)

Thought I'd mention that T&M sent me a letter of apology today AND a discount voucher! Nice of them.
On another note - it turns out I have a tree and shrub specialist centre not too far away from me so I'm off there at the weekend:)

Loofah, make sure you get one grown on a dwarfing rootstock.:thumb:

Sweepstake on the number of additional impulse-purchase plants anyone? :D
