I agree with PRO GARD. If you ever see a wet one you will be reminded what they really are. They are RATS with fluffy tails and I wonder who would be feeding the local rats ? In Devon they are eating them. I was shooting them at 15. Thanks god my cats like the flavour too.

    MOL & Pro-Gard,
You should both be ashamed of yourselves. The only people who should be allowed to kill the squirrels are the local council and even then under protest from us nature lovers. Who gave you the right to take a life?

Sorry, thats a load of Cra*.

I shoot them humanely using a silenced .22, head shots so a very quick death. I like to see songbirds and squirels predate the population by eating eggs.

Further, they can and do cause electrical fires and often chew the facia boards even on sound timber to get in. I changed some Iroko bardge boards last year on a house extension that was only eight years old, the only reason for this was squireel damadge.

I also shoot rabbits, woodpidgeon and rats, must make me a murderer....

To be fair gray squirrels are an alien species just like Japanese knotweed is, and how do we eradicate that? although saying that i don't think i could ever kill a squirrel as they are very cute :D but if you see Grey squirrels on the isle of wight you are by law obliged to kill them/report them...

Magpies take nestlings - are you going to shoot all of them too?

Cats take nestlings too - shoot them as well? I thought you had a cat Paul?

Where do you draw the line and why does man give himself the arrogant privilege to decide what has the right to live and what should die?

Squirrels have done well, there is no disputing that - using their adaptability and intelligence they have become a successful species. They breed and eat well due to ingenuity. Who do they remind you of? US!

Man screwed up by introducing the Grey Squirrel to Britain. Answer - start killing them all.

Man - biggest parasite on this planet... what to do... shoot eachother? Oh I forgot, they do that already.

    :(

We seem to be going down the same track as the cat and rat debate,it's not that long ago it was peeps talking about how they deal with rats which deeply upset Whiley who keeps them as pets, some subjects should be avoided if it means people are going to be upset, obviously we have squirrel lovers and and squirrel haters just leave it at that, one will ever convince the other of their point of view.

My apologies Walnut. You are, of course, completely right in saying this. I'll bow out of this one now as I don't want to fall out with anyone here over a difference of opinion.

Cm, As a vet you must have put down a lot of animals, this isthe so called arogant priveladge in wanting to determine the life cycle of nature. In the wild death can be a slow process.

As for my cat, I accept that his natural instinc is to hunt, I might however add that he rarely harms birds as hes fairly lathargic in the daytime!

Squirels do destroy eggs and do cause damadge to property. In the area I live Wye valley/ Forest of Dean we have large quantitys of broadleaved woodland and an overly healthy squirrel population. The squirel is an agile creature and has few predators.

Living in the countryside, as a child i was taught how to shoot, to have respect for what i shoot and how to prepare and cook it. In adult life I enjoy vermin control and ocasional clay shooting.

I didnt set out to fall out with anyone but mearly to add a differnt perspective.

Oopps - it's going to get emotive now

I'm in the 'I think that they are vermin' camp but agree that they are very entertaining.

Everyone should be allowed their own views and actions and these should be respected.
