I've been a member for ages, I've got rid of lots of stuff through freecycle, and equally I've recieved a lot of stuff! I've got bluebells in my garden that came from there, I've had a worktop dishwasher, some stepping stones for the garden and the surround on my fireplace came through there too!

    I love it:thumb:

    Hi all,

I've noticed a few mentions of Freecycle on GC recently. I think the the idea is brilliant.

My Son recommended we sign up a couple of weeks ago. I must have had my head in the sand for the last few years David! But to be honest the only gardening related paraphenalia I've seen thus far is 1 lawnmower. And I found the registration process a bit of pain; having to go through Yahoo and confirm Email addresses and stuff. Nor did I find the website very user-friendly, I had to hunt for the posts.
Pehaps this is just the case for my local group? Dizi, you seem to have had much better luck than me!

People have mixed feelings about freecycle. There's a lot of genuine peeps using it to good effect but there are also a lot of time wasters as well, so you have to take the rough with the smooth.

On the "My Groups" page there is a list of the groups you are signed up to. Under the group name, it tells you how many new posts there are, if you click on the words "New Messages" it will show you the messages with the newest first.

Also you can sign up to have the messages emailed to you, you may find this easier, you can either have them emailed each time they are posted or bundled into one email a day. To set this up, from the 'My Groups' page, click the link at the top of the page that states "Edit my groups". You can set the email preferences there.

You may find there are other groups nearby you can join too, for example, some towns are split into central north south etc.

I have had items for the garden and the house from there, and you can always try posting a wanted message, I got lots of sand for building a patio that way.

A lot of people give to the first person to respond, others wait for a while to give everyone a chance and choose someone.
    Good luck!

I've used it quite a lot, although more to get rid of stuff or occasionally request stuff. Got a shed (with no roof so we had to make that, and do a bit of creative woodwork on some of the rest of it!) for my allotment which was great as I couldn't have bought one at the time, and got rid of loads of paving slabs and kids toys that were left at my new house when i moved here. Much better than taking to the tip!

    David, lol.

Well i've answered a couple of 'offers' since i've joined but no comeback yet although the things i wanted are not showing as taken this morning. Never mind. I think it's a brilliant idea but there are bound to be abusers as is now with car boot sales - traders pretend to be not! Still better than going to the landfill as has been said. I wish i knew about it before. I have joined a local site that is all within about 5 miles of here so that's brilliant.

Hopefully i will get something, not for getting sake but because i want it & it would be dumped otherwise.

    cheers

    Hi Dizi,

Thanks for the instuctions. I've had another go, but I'm still not warming to it, lol. We had to register with Freecycle, then create a Yahoo ID as well. We sign into Freecycle, goto "My Groups" . It brings up the group we're with, but nothing about new messages or posts. When we click the group it takes us to the group homepage, but then we have to sign into that with the Yahoo ID. Maybe I'm just getting fussy in my old age, but I think it could be simpler.

We inadvertantly subscribed to receive individual Emails of each new post, after not checking mail for a few days, turns out my Inbox was almost full of Freecycle notifications! Too many to go through them all individually! Quickly rectified our settings.

I might take up your suggestion and check out another group, of a neighbouring town - when I'm feeling more patient, hehe.

Hello, I've just been told off by 'freecycle' cos apparently my first post should have been to offer somthing.

I answered a wanted and have today given my sewing machine to someone (went and near enough deliveved it) but apparently the first thing you should say is ...'offer..'

Smack on the wrists for me.

Do do it though, brilliant way of getting rid of what you have that someone can use.

    cheers

I love freecycling (although, ours is realcycle due to international politics)

I got some great things - especially while we were renting - like some big barrels for planting. I grew some delicious tomatoes and strawberries :) I also got some great vintage dining chairs that I will recover once I can get into the garage to get hold of them :)

I've also given away some great and often unusual things. It's a lovely feeling when you make someone's day :)
