We have a lovely one of these, but there are non variegated suckers coming from below the graft. The question is WHEN to remove them. I know some trees 'bleed' to death if damaged at the wrong time. Any ideas? TIA.

    Hi Palustris,

Pruning horse chesnuts in the summer helps them seal any wounds quicker than pruning then when dormant as you would do with other tree species.

So, you reckon I should do it now then, or is it a bit late?

I'd say it should be OK. I assume you're not removing any huge limbs but more of a small branch.

Ah, I assumed it was Aesculus x. carnea.

I think it is a Sweet Chestnut, but neither me nor the Boss can remember which one it is in particular.
Still never mind I am going to bite the bullet and remove the suckers. It dies, it dies.
