The pic below is of a very common plant which flowers in late summer, but nobody seems to know its name. Can you help ?
There is also a deep red version of this. Dont know if it is from the same plant family , this is the one I would like to obtain - any ideas?
    TIA

Crocosmia Lucifer. Deep red, orange and yellow flowered varieties exist.

Hi Harry, yes it has been around for years as the orange type, it does go by the name Crocosmia these days, but it was always called Montbretia years ago.... :hehe:

Harry - its quite a weed around here. You only have to wait a while and it appears from nowhere. However - I love it.

Thanks all for the replies and info , I know it can be a bit invasive and around my neck of the woods it seems every third garden has the orange variety. I will buy some bulbs of the Lucifer type for planting next spring :gnthb:

    cheers

Thanks Silver surfer - thats a very good selection.

I think most of us assume that 'Lucifer' is the only red one - but there are lots of others. I gather some are a bit shorter and not quite as floppy as 'Lucifer'. The one I fancy is 'Gloria', which looks pink.

    S. surfer - you are really good at recognising plants - do you work in the business or is it just a hobby?
