    Hi,
I received 3 bare root roses from Salding today.
I soaked them for 4 hours and planted them up. They are container roses and have been planted in a big pot.
    My question is:
Have spalding sent me these bare root roses too late?
How long does it take before flowering?
Can I expect buds this year?

    Cheers

it's a 'gemma'. The picture showed lots of small pink flowers.
I've put all three in a pot about 12 inches tall and 12 inches in diameter.
The pots about the same size as the one in spaldings catalouge, so I'm hoping it will be ok.
I've used irish moss peat and manure mixed together. I've also mixed in miracle gro rose pellets for the feed.
    Hope this is ok?

    Hi WOO (or anyone else).
Well, these 3 bareroot roses still have not flowered and have no sign of growth at all.
I have been watering and feeding regularly.
I will post a photo tomorrow if needed, but what's the chances of seeing anything this year now, or even next year. Or are they dead, should I contact the seller (spalding)?

P.S. This was my first attepmt at growing bare root roses but I followed all instructions, I soaked the roots for 3-4 hours as instructed and planted in good compost mixed with a little manure.
I have also used miricle gro every 14 days for the last month or so. No miracles have occured!!!!

    Cheers

My father in law gave me 6 roses, from some Telegraph offer I think, in April and only 3 of those have done anything. The tops were covered in wax

We see quite a few covered in wax, typically on supermarket offerings, I presume it's intended to keep moisture in and bugs out, it seems to work up to a point.

If there is no sign of growth feeding is pointless. The plantsare either trying to get going or they are gone the other way. Do they have any leaves at all, or ere they just bare twigs? If so, how do the stems look? Green and supple or brown-grey and crunchy? Are the thorns red or grey? If there is any sign of life keep the roses damp (not swimming) and give them time. No need to feed until they are growing strongly.

Yes, give them time. The ones I have that did get away took a long time.

I would check to see if they are still alive - go down to the base of the plant - and with your thumb nail scape a little bark away - if its green then they're just recovering. Put them in a sheltered area out of strong wind, and watch the watering - overwatering will kill any developing roots.

Bare rooted roses are usually lifted from a field before growth starts and then sold and planted out so that the roots have time to establish before the plant shoots. Its late to lift and sell roses as bare roots as the plants will be well started into growth - the fact that they arrived leafless sounds a bit ominous to me. But roses can be tough blighters - so give them time and see what happens.

    Hi again,
Definitley no growth and I think the plants are dead. I have scraped the bark and it's not green.
Will they come to life next year or should I just bin them (Obviously complaing to spalding first)?

I tend to give things a year to recover ... just in case ... but from your description I would think its less than a 1% chance
