    Hi all

Just into my 2nd year of growing, and redcently dug up my spuds and have a plot appoximately 6 ft by 12 ft lying idle and wondered what I should grow in time to harvest at Xmas ? Preferably something root-veg that will taste nice roasted. Had a good crop of turnips but fancy something a bit different. If it helps, garden is well sheltered and south facing.

    Any ideas ?

    Thanks

    Craig

In the time span you are talking about I would suggest stump rooted carrots, they will need some protcetion from frost though.:gnthb:

Bit of a tall order Craig, but you could try some Pak Choi. They should get on fine. You might get 2 crops in, but the second crop might need a bit of fleece.
No use for roast vegetables, but lovely braised, or you could put them in the bottom of the oven for 10 minutes with a splash of water and a knob of butter if the oven is on anyway.

I've got spuds, parsnips, cabbage, swede and carrots in for Christmas - some will get there, some won't.

But it's probably a bit late to sow and plant now, Craig.

How about some salad for your starter, though? Cut and come again baby leaf lettuce?

And some spinach. If it does well you can braise it, if it's slow you can cut some baby leaves for the salad.
And some pea shoots. Just plant the peas shoulder to shoulder in a pot and cut the shoots when they are 4" high. The peas will shoot up to 3 times.
Lovely in a salad (tastes like fresh peas) or a nice garnish for your starter.

    Thanks for everyone's ideas. :gnthb:

Looks like I've left it too late for anything substantial. I have got a fair few parsnip and salsify plants in which I believe get better with frosts, so I might leave a few in to pull up Xmas day.
