    Am I right in thinking potato's that have gone green are poisonous?

    :thumb: If the spud is sprouting in the light, it will certainly also be greening, and all green parts are poisonous!, provided you cut away all green parts and skin, what's left is OK, BUT, if the whole spud has turned green, the toxin will have spread deep into the flesh, so it should definitely be discarded.

    The reason I asked was "Asda" had some on the shelf which were most certainly going green I did inform the assistant who looked suprised but before making a fuss thought I had better make sure of my facts....

    I remember making a big fuss about green crisps as a child, we used to think anyone who ate a green crisp was in bug trouble! :)

    Yes green potatoes are poisonous, and there can be poison spread throughout the potato, even if only part of it is green. The poison is the same as that found in deadly nightshade, but it seems there can't be much of it in potatoes since cases of poisoning from potatoes are extremely rare. See Widipedia

    The super stores should be selling their potatoes in paper sacks just like they do in mainland europe to avoid this problem.
    At the end of the day it's down to the cost of the pack to the super market that dictates things..
