Shading and Insulating???

:confused:Would really appreciate some help with both the shading and insulating regarding my metal greenhouse. I have no idea how to apply either and would certainly like some help instructing me how one should put up shading and insulation. I have been given a load of green net with eyelets but have no idea how to fix it to my greenhouse. I believe this is used for shading? :confused:

 

Hi aromatic, i had the green mesh type shadin in my last greenhouse its easy to put up just dosn't do your fingers much good. just cut it to size as you go along, you may have to cut front and back points before you go, in the metal frame you have grooves put your mesh up against it so it covers all the glass then press a clip thingy against the mesh and into the groove then twist till it locks into place ( thats the finger hurtin bit ) if you have peices that curl out on the overlap just use tie wraps to hold them in place. i hope that was some help, k.x

I have seen those twisty thing's in a gardening/greenhouse magazine, so will go ahead and purchase some and see what I can manage to do... aside hurt my finger!! (not looking forward to that part!!) If you are wanting both insulation and shading, why not use bubblewrap, it does both jobs. I have done both my greenhouses by sticking the bubblewrap to the glass with Evostick solvent free impact adhesive. you can pull it off when you want to. The bubblewrap diffuses the suns rays so provides a mild shading and stops the plants getting scorched. Paint the adhesive on the glass around the edge of the frame, when dry, press the bubblewrap onto it (it's similar to paperhanging).

 

Thanks for the suggestion Larkshall. My hubby and I have put up the green net shading today that I was given. We have ended up putting the netting outside of the greenhouse via drilling some holes into the metal frame that sort of sticks out (hope that makes some sense to you!! sorry...) and attaching the netting/shading via the drilled holes with some flexi string. I will be needing to insulate the greenhouse next winter so will most certainly try your idea of sticking the bubble wrap to the frames with the Evostick.... I am going to make a note of the brand you have mentioned and required specs and go and buy some in ready. I brought some of those green twisty things today and tried to put the shade netting up inside the greenhouse attaching the netting to the frames within the grooves but the blasted things kept falling out so hubby observed my slowly brewing annoyance and steered me to putting the netting outside of the greenhouse via the drilled holes etc method. So far so good!!!! Needed a nice cup of tea after that particular job and hubby disappeared into the depths of his shed for a bit of peace!!**!!... He may be regretting this new greenhouse of mine......

 

I bought (coolglass) in wilkinsons for (ie greeenhouse shading) there are four packets in box you mix one packet with 1/4 pint of water and apply over the glass with a brush or you can spray one packe covers a area of (15 sq mt) i guess it will do the job fine not done mine yet i shall wait until we have our red hot summer ah.

 

:thumb:I'm with Larkshall here. Mine is done that way too and it's left on all year.

 

My OH and I finally managed to use the netting given to me... made more sense to use it up, just did not know how to actually put it up. OH and I have drilled some holes into the the metal frame that juts out from the outside of the greenhouse and attached the netting to that with some flexi string and all in all not a bad job done... seems to be working nicely anyway. I do really appreciate the help and advice given by all of you that have taken the time and trouble to answer my thread.. I would have used the paint on method if the netting had not already been readily available.... xxx :thumb:

anakat.... please do not feel lazy... as long as it stays on... it does not matter how you attach it... I think yours is a much better and easier idea and I am all for easier ideas..... next year for me at least the holes will already be drilled and ready to go so will not take so much effort to put it up!! My next problem is when (whispers quietly... when winter) comes around again and I need to insulate greenhouse... how do you do that!!??!!

 

I used bubble wrap, and fixed it using adhesive velcro strips strategically placed around the frame of the greenhouse and then matched on the bubble wrap. This allows me to take it down for cleaning and then just hang back in place again.

For fixing anything to the inside of an aluminium, be it shade netting or bubble, you can use Alliplugs. You just push the end through the material and fix it to the frame. For wood frame greenhouses you can use Allipins, These are like very big drawing pins.

 

I have put my bubble-wrap up inside the greenhouse with aliplugs, very easy. It has stayed in situ and seems to be fine. PS: don't forget to ventilate.

 

I'm feeling smug here.. I just reach up to the roof and unfurl the roller blinds that I brought at the same time as the Rhino greenhouse I purchased. But it all cost a heck of a lot... but those blinds are brilliant.

I only have the roof ones at the moment, but with a birthday coming up I think I might be getting 1 sides worth as well.

There so easy and neat. i love them.

 

Bhindi, are you actually growing anything in the greenhouse, or just playing with the blind?:D:D:D
