They are the cones that enclose the seed.

Looks a bit like some kind of cypress, but I think you may be a bit too early in picking them off.

Once dried out a bit the seed will fall out.

yes each cone seems to contain about 4 seeds.

ok so i revisit the tree in a month or so?

should i allow the seeds to fall then look for them on the floor or just before?

    thanks

They will be very small and not possible to find once fallen.

Collect the cones as they start to go brown and put in a paper bag in a warm place, the seed will then be shed and you can sow them straight away.

Looks like conifer seeds / cones to me.
I don't know why you want them but if you do here goes.
In my last garden I had conifers and they dropped those little cones / seeds everywhere.
Result - little conifers everywhere. They seemed to like the gravel paths,
If you really want some - fill some trays / pots with a 50/ 50 mixture of soil and gravel.
Leave those containers anywhere near the conifers.
Stand back and wait for all those little conifers to pop up.
Decide what to do with millions of them.
    Good luck.

yeah i know what you're saying, why would anyone want to grow conifers from seed when there are sooo many other more beautiful things to grow.

well, you see i'm a complete novice so i just want to start off with something relitivly simple so that will spur me on to grow more, and perhaps a little more difficult each time.

I remember growing Lawsons cypess from seed I collected in Bedgebury Pineatum back in the early 70s, it was an interesting experience and I had a great hedge for about 25yrs from those seedings.

So I say go ahead and watch how the growth changes as the seedlings get older.
