    Hi

I have this sticky stuff all over my fences and shed. Just wondered if anyone can help identify it, and how to get rid of it.

Also, as a side point - we have had a big problem this year with flies, and red velvet mites in the garden. Could this stuff be related to either?

    Cheers in advance

    Dave

This is bizarre! I have just been out (armed with a plastic bag over my hand) to feel it, so see if it was like jelly as advised in one of the posts that disappeared, and its totally gone. All of it.

Unless it is brought out in the rain, as it was raining in the original photos !?

    not sure really.

In the old days it would be, apply a coat of good preservative.

Bleach might work but it seems a bit domestic for what is basically an outdoor problem.

Be careful where the spray goes, it will kill plants.

Could it not just be the resin coming out of the wood ? Bit of a guess but looks like it .

I'm no expert, but like Gogs my first thought was resin from the wood.

I think that might be Coral Spot fungus.

I'd treat it with a multi-purpose wood treatment that contains fungicide - Ronseal or Cuprinol or a DIY own brand.

How long is it since the wood was last painted with preservative? If it's a while since it was done, it might be worth putting that on your to-do list too!

We've had a few posts disappear from this thread as Marley says.
My thinking is, if it was resin it would remain, not disappear like some of the posts have:)

Its difficult to find a wood "treatment" that actually contains anything nasty these days, so no nasties, no kill fungi.

Thanks all for the amazing response - especially for a newbie.

Have to say it was most almost exactly like the jelly fungus pic Ziggy posted.

I was slow to treat the wood when i got it - a year maybe. And I am guessing it is suffering from damp as the 'fungus' appears only behind the shed where it gets no light due to only a foot gap. The brown paint is what I applied, not sure it is specifically for fence panels though.

The garage has also got covered in moss where there is also only a foot gap to the shed and no light, so I am going to attack it with copious amounts of bleach this week, repaint everything, and see how it goes.

    Thanks again

Its too late now, you're part of the family :tnp: Not a newbie anymore :D

Scrape the moss off for use in your hanging baskets & don't put a copper wire on the shed roof as that would kill any organic growth underneath, but that is of course illegal:wink:
