    Hi,
I would grow lilies in pots but once they have or even before they have finished flowering a brown spot appears on the leaf and they tend to melt away. Anyone any answers or comments? I have looked at a few sites but this problem is never mentioned.

    Many thanks for any help.

    Best Regards

    David :(

I answered this once but all the posts seem to have disappeared. the brown spots
you have on your lily could be the larvae of the lily beetle, if the brown spots are
a gooey slime that will be the excrement of the larvae, I wash them off the plants
with a hose, it seems to get rid of them and they don't come back, you can of
course use an insecticide but if a jet of water does the job it avoids using chemicals.

Out of interest, the beetles are bright red and easy to spot. If you see them on your lilies, they drop down into your hand if you disturb them with your other hand. Then you have to squash them ofcourse! My lily beetles didn't arrive till much later this year, due to the long hard winter I assume, but I recently washed off some slimey goo with larvae inside. Actually, my other half has just told me that he noticed some more beetles chomping on the leaves recently. (Typical, didn't get rid of them though!!)
