Hi I am after some advice, I am growing some chillis outdoors and they were all looking good a nice fresh green colour but now many of them are turning black. Is this just a stage before they go red or is there something going wrong,

    Any advice apreciated

    Thanks

    Pat

Check the seed packet. some turn red and I think some turn black unless I have it wrong. It all depends on the type of chillis you are growing.

Chillies come in all different colours so you need ot do what Shobhna has said. If you don't still have the packet then the next best thing is to take a photo and put it on here so we can have an idea of how it looks. Are the leaves still looking OK? If so, then it is almost certain that you have a black or purple variety. Purple chillies are the in thing at the moment.

I wouldn't worry about the black bits Patl. Chillies do that before ripening to red.
The purple ones tend to be purple from the beginning.
Or Black Hungarian starts nearly black and ripens to a beautiful dark red.

My chilies get picked whilst green because I need them like that, if I ever had a glut of them, I might just allow a few to ripen to red.
Plan this year is to see if I can overwinter a couple of the chilli plants.:thmb:

Thanks to all for your replies. The Chillies are a red variety so hopefully they are just ripening. I actually heard exactly the same question on a local radio program on Sunday morning and the expert on the radio said the same as Alice
