I grew some broccoli this year. I only grew a couple of plants and I had a successful crop. However after I had harvested about 8 broccoli heads, the cabbage whites set in.

Is there anything i can use to keep these pests at bay? Literally within 48 hours there were caterpillars all over the plants and within 72 hours all i had left were spines of the plants. No leaves at all.

I love butterflies but this was most disheartening!

Best bet would be to cover them with fleece then the butterflies can't land and lay eggs.

I have also read somewhere that broccoli should be harvested in January, is this correct? Most of mine was ready for harvesting mid July??

Depends upon the type. My preference is for purple sprouting broccoli which crops in March/April. But I believe the more common type, also called calibrase, crops earlier.
