Been out in the shed again and made another Nest Box, this time for the great tit.
The hole size is 29mm, 28mm is recommended but didn't have one in that size at the builders merchants.

*TIP* I find it useful to use some offcuts of ply with panel pins nailed in to help keep the workpiece off the paper, whilst painting on PVA, or you end up with paper stuck all over it.
The panel pins mean that there is minimal contact to an already painted surface, you just give it a touch up after or just do the bottom once the rest is dried. :D

    Looking good.
I like the way the roof sits securely on the top. No need for a hinge.

    Cheers Doghouse :)

I think for something this small hinges are a bit over kill as you then have to have some form of latch to keep the lid down.
The 2, 1" by 1" are a snug fit and the small piece of 1" by 1" receives a single screw in the back so is as tight as a lid.
Still got a couple of pieces of off cut ply to use up yet so no doubt ill end up making another:cool:

The problem too is that hinges can rust up and there's sometimes a small gap where water can get in

The top of my tea-house fits the same way, no hinges, just like a 2.5ft square "box lid" the sheer weight of it keeps it in place.
The sight of that little bit of roofing felt reminded me I've 3 ten metre rolls stored in the garage, waiting for me to change the felt on the whole roof!
