Hi Yall, I saw a gardening tips dvd with Steve Brookes on it the other day & one of the things that intrigued me was his advice on using what the hoover pick up to spread over the soil of his tomatoes as it is full of nutrients. As of yet I'm not growing any veg but was wondering if I can use it in the compost bin to the same effect?? any Ideas?

By the way, I have a fantastic Blackwall tumbler composter that I would reccommend to anyone!

[IMG] Yes I put the hoover contents in the compost as well.. [IMG] I have a tumbler as well as a bin/heap.. The tumbler is very good & quick I find.. I keep a tray underneath to catch any juices that drip out too.. [IMG]

Same here we chuck the hoover contents in the compost. Most of what is in there seems to be dog hairs so should contain nitrogen. I am always looking for drier stuff to open up the compost - I have too much lawn mowings during the summer.

Well we have a special bin in the kitchen so all tea bags etc go in there. Only get two bags of compost a week and by the time it has rotted down.... Its nice stuff but after a year I am only left with about a third of a bin.
Have to get my in laws collecting and I am now cutting their lawn...I think I might have to mix mowings with newspaper. As I now a veg plot hopefully that will generate more compost. I hate throwing things in the bin. We compost all kitchen waste, I am keeping newspapers for the bean trench, cereal packets cut up for cabbage root fly collars, loo rollls as pots ( thanks to this forum), glass is recycled, plastic bottles are recycled, cardboard in the green bin. Not much left after that.

[IMG] If you are thinking of composting allot of grass mowings & shredded paper, geoff, may I suggest you invest in a tumbler for that.. It really stops the mowings from clumping into sticky horrd lumps.. It will compost the mowings much quicker too.. I use a tumbler & bin/heap & can produce some good compost that way... ;) :D

Just a twist on this thread, if you have a long haired dog, groom it, if you have a tumble drier, empty the filter. Both remains can be either added to the compost 'OR LEFT SOMEWHERE FOR THE WILD BIRDS. THEY USE IT FOR THEIR NESTS'

I never thought to empty the vacuum bags or the tumbler mesh on to the compost heap but it does make sense. Thanks for the tips!

The neighbours used to put their dog's hair out into the bushes for the birds for nests too. I put the cat's hair into the little container in the kitchen where the teabags, veggie peelings, etc. are collected for the compost heap.

I'm also now putting all my shredded (non-glossy) receipts, statements etc on the compost. Certainly don't need to worry about identity fraud then!

Hey r200 - our neighbours did that a couple of years after they retired from their shop. They tore everything in half, put one half in the blue rollie bin we all have for paper, and the other in a newly-created raised shrub bed.
