It actually does the compost heap good too, by balancing out the moisture levels. one of the keys to good compost is a variety of materials, here's what you can put in:
.Shredded paper (although not shiny magazine type paper) cotton and wool fabrics
.Uncooked vegetable trimmings, peelings and tea bags from the kitchen
    .Annual weeds
    .Tops of perennial weeds
    .Old bedding plants
    .Soft hedge clippings
    .Dead leaves
    .Lawn mowings

My pond dredgings I put straight on the flower beds as it's already mostly decomposed.

But as for vacuum contents - well I never! Never considered those. (Not that I empty my cleaner very often as the bag is huge!!

I have been composting my hooverings regularly - most of it breaks down - though I have found that the pen lids, small lego type toys and tinsel pieces etc don't decompose as readily! [IMG] If I'm not using them for planting seeds, I tend to compost toilet roll tubes too. All my guinea pig litter (megazorb/shredded paper and wet newspapers plus all doings) gets composted too.

I also compost haircuttings (from guinea pigs and child) - though at this time of year, I start to peg it to the washing line for the birds - my neighbours have stopped asking why there is sheeps wool (collected from the countryside out of interest to see if it would go - we are less than a mile from the nearest fields - it went!), dog hair and horse hair (all donated!) hung up to dry!
