You have a gift Mackem - not sure which I like the best, because they are all perfect. Your work is so because they are made with loving care and patience, hand made wooden items cannot be rushed.

    Well done [IMG]

Thanks for sharing Mackem, they look lovely - I'd never have thought they were pallets originally!

Can you tell me please what is the best way of learning woodwork? Or how you learnt? It's something I've often thought I'd like to learn, can't really see myself turning out things to the level you have but I'd love to see how it's done if nothing else. I am a bit shy of just diving in, plus I don't have all the necessary tools etc. (I have a few chisels, hack saw etc. but I'd like to have a go at turning and more practical diy type things too, and to learn how to do carving which I guess would involve chisels and hammer, which I have, plus some idea of how to apply them, which I definitely don't have!)

Claire, many years ago my sister and I joined a woodwork class at college, unfortunately as there were too many enrolled our tutor couldn't get to see us all so we changed over to a Metal work class, that was great and we were the only two ladies, of course we neither expected or received any help from the gents in our class.

I made a smashing garden rake and hammered copper, making a candle holder, still use it at Christmas.

Have you thought of going onto television for DIY programmes, they are very good.

Hi Brandy and thanks for the reply - metalwork sounds cool too, maybe I should try that next! I have watched a few tv programs, will have to look out for some more (although I guess the good thing about college courses is you get to use their kit to decide if you want to get your own).

I'd still love to hear how you started out too, Mackem, hope you don't think i'm hijacking your post.

Hi Mackem just 'found' this thread and had to join the gang and say you do some wonderful work.

I bet your wife is always pleased with the little gifts you make for her and I hope she returns the favour and keeps you well stocked up with tea and biscuits while your working away! :D

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, thanks everyone for your comments,i am self taught largely, apart from w/work lessons in school over 30+ years ago.I do look at w/working sites to pick up any hints or tips and have learned loads from them.I hope to alter my shed soon so i can work indoors in the cold weather,i do have a washouse for a workshop as well, but i have that many tools and bit's of wood i need extra space.
