I always thought it great that Steve Ovett was the Rebel. Just allowed his running to do the talking whereas Coe went after every interview he could get. Then when Ovett finished running and switched to Presenting, we then had someone who knew what they were talking about.

I don't quite understand the anti-Coe feeling on this thread! I think he has done well by putting himself forward for a lot of things which, frankly, the rest of us probably wouldn't have the drive or brains to do. He's quite an interesting person too - not the standard Anglo-Saxon stuffed shirt. His mother is half Indian; his grandfather was a hotelier in Delhi. I'm quite glad he's playing a major role in organising the 2012 Olympics, as I don't think we're exactly over-endowed with people in public life who could organise the well-worn cliche concerning breweries and drinking parties.

I agree, Scotkat - there are lots of unsung heroes like you who give up a lot of time for charity (how about our own Shiney and his wonderful garden?). I've nothing but admiration for people who help others in this way and it certainly isn't my intention to offend anyone. It is true, however, that the great, the good and those who have a lot of money who can organise big charity events tend to get the recognition. I don't mean to suggest that this is right or that any one contribution is better than another; it's just the way life is. Just for the record: I think that people who don't have much themselves but still give freely to others without making a song and dance about it are worth a hundred of Bill Gates who, having lumbered the world with Microsoft, now seems to be intent on buying his way into heaven with good works.

Claralou & Scotkat you both make very valid statements there & nobody can do too much for charity if it is from the heart...

There was great rivalry between the two of them at the time & Seb always came over as the pushy one trying to get all the limelight to shine on him yet Ovett always worked the harder in my eyes.. That was all..

There are plenty of others who gain awards for less than what Coe achieved, certainly his athletic performances were something special. At the end of the day it is the system we have inherited and will remain so unless and until the 'Revolution' and I confess not to be in favour of that..........

The Revolution would be quite good if planned for a nice summers days, advanced notice given so deck chairs can be obtained, a nice picnic and a chilled bottle or two ... then sit back and enjoy the occasion .. well isn't that what the French did and look how that turned out ! :lollol::lollol::lollol:
