I have just cleared a small strip of land at the side of my house and planted rose trees and other small plants. Had the usual pests, white fly, black fly, slugs and ants. Now I have discovered some sort of a bug that is making a hole at the side of my plants and then seems to be going under the plant and throwing out soil as it goes. Have not seen the beast as yet and cannot decide what it is. I have had vine weevil in the past. Any ideas?

Hi Marjorie, I can't imagine a bug that would do that, maybe you have a resident mole??????, keep us updated as to what the mystery beast might be.

Thanks for your replies. I got a friend to have a look at the holes and he said it could be a mouse. My husband said no way is it a mouse. I have just been in the garden after a heavy shower and have seen quite a few wasps flying over the area, and one of them seemed to be emerging from one of the holes. I have caught one of the wasps and it has yellow and black stripes and two wings. Maybe a hover-fly or ichneumons (I have got a book out of the library), but would these things go under the roots of the plant?

I have taken some photos of the holes in my garden. As I am not that experienced with the computer I wonder if someone would let me have their email address and then I could forward the photos to them to see what they think. This is getting desperate as these holes are multiplying fast. Another five this morning.
