Cheap Weed'n Feed?

Hi all,

just started on with this gardening malarkey. My wife is the plant expert, which she enjoys greatly - although I think she's hoping I may get hooked too at some point.

In the meantime, I'm in charge of the lawn. It's full of dandelions and other weeds which need taking care of. I'm not averse to sticking chemicals on it, and indeed have bought a drop-spreader to apply such. However, the weed & feed in our local garden centre is over 20 quid a sack (25Kg) - having spread 2 sacks, it looks like I'll need about 6 or 7 more!

Is there any cheaper alternative? Agricultural stuff maybe? Lawn size is just over an acre.

Try Wilkinsons.

They do;

a liquid feed,

a weed n' feed,

and a weed, feed n' mosskill.

I've used all three for the last couple of years (but not at the same time).
I always burn the grass if I use the granule type.

I use all their "own brand" garden products, rose fertilser, sequestered iron, etc. always good value for money. If you check the list of "ingedients" on the back of the packs, they are often very similar or the same as well known brands.

Looks OK, but then it's rained for part of most days here for over a month!

We're up in 'God's Own Country' - just keep heading North until people tell you you're in God's Own, then drive about another hour North and you really will be - in Northumberland! :thumb: :D

Oh, and I've just rung home to be told that we have moles now too! I think there are a couple of folk around our neck of the woods that will deal with them - but is there anything I can do myself? Not back for another couple of days, so don't know how bad the problem is.

We too are looking for something similar. We have spent a good part of the year taming a couple of acres that go with the barn we converted. When we bought it, it was very rough pasture with weeds that looked like they'd been on steroids.

Now its all green and looks like it may be possible to turn into orderly grass - if not lawn quality stuff.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a granule type 'feed and weed' as we have a spreader thing that fits on the back of our ride on mower?

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Try Evergreen weed and feed, you can plug it onto your hose pipe and away you go. Takes about two weeks and at first looks like it has killed the lawn but then (in my experience) it comes back a lot greener and less dandylionie.
Re the moles, we had a problem with them at my old house. Take an empty platic bottle (lemonade, coke etc) and dig this into one of their holes the wind blowing down the bottle should scare them away. It worked for us at least!
