    1) starts growing quickly
    2) gives good cover all year round.
    3) is prickly to act as a deterrent

And to the left of the ground ia 2 metres of teellis above concrete which ideally i would wanta climber to cover.

also, the width of ground i will be planting the climbers in is approx 6 metres long: how many plants willi need to buy?

    Thanks

Apart from brambles, the only thorny climber I can think of is a climbing rose. However, there is a wall shrub called Pyracantha which would do the job.:gnthb:

Pyracantha is certainly thorny. I have the scars to prove it, having just had to tame one in a neighbouring garden. Personally I don't think it has much else going for it, however. I think you'd be better off planting a few climbing roses (exactly how many depends on what you choose - some are monsters, others grow to more modest proportions) even though they won't give you cover in the winter. You could fill in with an evergreen, non prickly climber such as Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) which would give you leaves all year round and flowers over quite a long period in the summer. 'Dart's World' is a nice variety.

A word of warning. All this plant life is going to be pretty heavy once it's grown a bit. A sturdy trellis will cope for a good few years, but a flimsier effort will be matchwood within a couple of seasons.
