One of my favourite plants of all, is Cistus.

One in my garden ('Silver Pink', I think) is getting a bit straggly, and I'm desperate to get a cutting from it.

I know how to do it in theory, but just CANNOT get the damn thing to root.

Anyone had any luck who could give me an idiot's guide to propagating this plant?

Hi Andewh I have both Cistus and Cistus x Purpureus:)

I propigate mine from Semi-ripe cuttings in late July early August (Now).Select non-flowering side shoots and tug them from the main stem,Pare back the heel of the bark to about one/eighth of an inch and dip the cuttings in hormone-rooting powder.Shorten them to 3inches long.removing lower leaves and unripe stem tip.

Put the cuttings to half their depth,2 inches apart, round the edge of a 4 inch Pot,I usually fill with equal parts of multipurpose compost and Vermiculite or Perlite.
water in,cover cutting with an inflated plastic bag and i put them on warm and bright windowsill away from direct Sunlight.

Is that one in the pic the x purpureus, Owl?

I just love them. Those delicate single flowers that look almost fake they are so perfect. And my Silver Pink has amazing silver foliage with masses of these pale pink flowers - incredible colour scheme on one plant.

I might try and see the National Collection next year.

Update - I followed your Idiot's Guide, WiseOwl, and the cuttings haven't wilted - yet! So far so good, fingers crossed.

      BAH.

Gone. Dead. Wilted, rotted, fell off it's perch, shuffled off this mortal coil, pushing up the daisies, is an ex-Cistus.

Apparently 'Silver Pink' is particularly hard to root, but that gives me no comfort.

      Thanks for trying, though!
