I have just taken a new house and in the garden is this tall type of rose. It has a very long, bare prickly stem and all the flowers are at the top - about 5-6ft high.

What I need to know is what type of rose bush is this (tree/floribunda/hybrid etc.) and how / when do I prune it ie. how far down do I cut it at the end of the season for it to grow again next year? I'm new to this so any advice appreciated.

Hi Barryman Is it part of the other Rose canes that I can see or is it on its own,Looks like its been just left to cope and overgrown,If it were me I would give it some support, strap it upright and train it to become a Standard, and best time for Pruning is in February,I would cut back by two thirds down to an outward facing Bud:)

    This link should help:)
