Hello there - wondered if anyone could help out with an id for this plant. It would appear to have sprung up from a bulb about 1 month ago & is now about 18 inches tall.

The shoot was very distinctive, coming up as a mottled grey/brown & white spike & has now sprouted leaves which have small variegated stripes spreading from the centre of the leaf.

There's a couple of pictures here.

Any guidance most welcome, as I'd like to get some more of whatever it is!

    Hello there,
they tell me it is a " dracunculus vulgaris " (also known as : dragon arum, dragon flower, voodoo lily), a plant with spectacular leaves and flowers, but to be admired "holding your breath" (yeah, the scent is a bit of a let down)...

PS come to mind some spectacular flowers but badly scented such as: "arum titanum" and "rafflesia arnoldii"...

It is related to a lot of arums including ones that smell like dead horses.

Dracunculus vulgaris - Giant Arum Lily

An easy to grow Arum Lily, native to the eastern Mediterranean. Happy grown in a fertile sunny spot in the garden, but may need some protection as the foliage appears early and may be damaged by frost. A spectacular plant with huge flowers.

Grows to 90cm, flowering in mid-summer. These will need 2 good seasons growth before flowering.
