My name is Jason but please feel free to call me J. everyone else does...

I joined here to get some help, support, advice and maybe have a laugh and joke along the way...

I'm the wrong side of 40 so I have hung up my dancing boots and replaced them with wellie boots...

The reason I found this site was I was Googling for some Privet hedge advice. I have just moved to a new home and it has a very big garden. The garden is bordered with a Privet hedge which I like very much. The thing is I know nothing about them as it is my first...

My question is can I stop the growth on one side by building a shed, kennel, wooden structure right up next to it, or do I HAVE to leave 2 feet of access? I would really like to trim back about 30 feet of the Privet and build a couple of kennels up against it. Is this OK?

    Hi J,

    Welcome to the group.

I think you ought to detach your privet query from this intro, and enter it into another, more suitable board, as this one if purely for intros, and will not get the same attention as a dedicated board.

    Thanks

    JW

Hi J & welcome to Cardeners Gorner,

You can cut privet right back, it'll never stop growing, its what it does, its all it does.

Shouldn't be a problem building badger kennels up against it, don't know about dog kennels though.:)

Good evening J and welcome to the site. I would say that if you are going to put a structure up next to the hedge you would need to leave 2 or 3 ft to enable maintenance of said structure.:gnthb: Also, Privet does more than grow, as has been suggested, they also produce highly scented white flowers.:thumb:

You're right there Dai, I loves the pale green moths that come to feed on the nectar.

Thanks very much for the WELCOME and the advice...

It's just what I needed to know. I am not worried about maintenance of my kennels at the moment as I will be replacing them with a new set of more permanent ones in the near future. So if I leave 2 feet behind the replacement ones for maintenance, will the Privet grow with that much light?

This particular border/hedge is running from North to South with the kennel block backed onto the West side of the hedge...

No problem with doing that. You will still need to trim the privet back a couple of times a year or it will make it difficult for maintenance. It will be easy to keep it neat.

The only problem you might have is that the hedge will continue to grow upwards and I'm not sure two feet is wide enough for you to be able to get to the top to keep the height down. It all depends on how high you are intending to let it grow. If it is low enough for you to cut the top without needing a ladder then it is easy. Otherwise 2ft is a bit tight for getting a ladder in - a small set of steps will be OK.

    Good luck. :gnthb:
