This plant / shrub / tree is growing in the orchard across the lane from me. Originally when I saw it peep up over the wall in front of the lemon tree I thought it was a wild rose. But now this clump of light coloured leaves has formed on the top whereas the bottom leaves are greyish green. It is soft and there are no thorns.

    Any ideas?

I thought the same as you, Waco. As I said, glacing as we came in our gate I thought it was a wild rose then this head of hair (leaves, actually) appeared quite suddenly.

    No scent whatsoever.

Dont know what it is but I'm sure the bright green new growth will probably turn into grey leaves like at the bottom.
So the bottom ones are probably the best to try and ID it with.
Whatever it is, its fast growing.
    Any sign of flowers?
Euphobia of some kind, a guess in the dark.
    Does it have milky sap?

Yes, it's fast growing. But why is the top growth like a head of hair and the rest isn't?

No, no (don't think so) and no, pete.

    Very strange plant.

Can we have a close up of the lower leaves?

I guess the plant grows in stages, a bit like one years growth followed by another, it must have made a resting bud at the top of the stem which has now burst and the new growth is branching out.

Sorry LOL it doesn't ring any bells at the moment, I presume it grown on its own, without any human help.
It looks like a fast grower, are the lemons irrigated?
It looks like quite an interesting plant, with the bluey grey foliage and the red stems.
Do you think it maybe left alone long enough to get flowers?

    No, woo, don't think it's a Euc.

pete, yes, the lemons and oranges/tangerines/nesperas/plums/apples/whatever are on irrigation .... it suddenly sprung up this Spring, without human help me thinks. He (the neighbour) did put in grape vines in the Autumn which was a novelty over the stone walls.

I'll keep my eye on it as I have for the last couple of months and keep you posted. Very strange.
