Yeah, not all forums are as well mannered as ours :gnthb:

That's a real shame Ziggy, is it worth picking up a cheap spare from the breakers?

It was no problem. Besides Ziggy has been very helpful to me. Pleasure to help him.

Your welcome to the tea and cake Ziggy. Saves my blood sugar going through the roof...........AGAIN!

Mrs Chopper put on what can only be described as a sumptious feast over christmas. I ate very well, but not too wisely. Normal blood sugar levels should be between 4 and 6. I over did it and my blood sugar shot up to 35!!!! Had to take a lot of extra medication to bring it down. Now eating salad LOLOL.

Thankfully/unfortunately, thanks to visitors ther eis not much cake, christmas pudding and mince pies left. Good job too or I would be overdosing.

    Chopper.

Sorry mate, never worked on a Vectra. Maybe a call to your local Vauxhall dealer.

    Chopper.

What Veccy is it? Diesel or petrol? Vectra B (old shape) or C (new shape)? When was it last serviced? Often reports of a bad fuel mix are down to simple things like a clogged air filter, dirty oil, faulty spark plugs. The dirty oil one is often overlooked because many people see oil as nothing more than a lubricant, but in modern engines your oil is part of the emmissions control. It traps nasties from the gases that leak past the piston rings on combustion, and then vents these nasty gases into the inlet manifold so they go round again to be burnt off. Dirty oil can't trap the filth as well, so more filth goes through the engine for a second burn, increasing your emmissions, and upsetting the lambda sensor in the exhaust.

If it has been serviced recently then read on.

The Vectra B diesels are known for dodgy fuel pumps, resulting in a bad mix of fuel/air because the fuel pressure is not regulated well.

Vauxhalls in general are noted for common problems with their EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. This issue is very common. The EGR valve gets the job of directing some of your exhaust fumes back into the air intake side (your inlet manifold) so that partially burnt fuel can be sent round again, so as to reduce emmissions and and improve mpg. The engine management computer adjusts the valve opening while at the same time adjusting the fuel injector opening time, to maintain the correct fuel to air mix. It does this based on the signal from the (lambda) sensor in the exhaust.

What happens is over time the EGR valve gets coked up and sticks, so that too much exhaust gas is recirculated, which means not enough air goes in, so the fuel mix is wrong and the engine management computer gets upset and raises a warning. Engine performance is reduced too, but it will usually continue to run depending on what position the valve is stuck in. Stuck full closed and you'd hardly notice until your MOT when your emmissions would be up slightly. Stuck fully open and your car is going nowhere because it cant breath. It will fire, run badly for a couple of seconds, then conk out. Somewhere in between and the light comes on, and fuel economy and performance drops.

If it is that, and that's a common problem recognised by Vauxhall, their are two fixes. One is to remove the EGR valve and clean it with carb cleaner. The other is to have your engine management computer updated by Vauxhall so that it leaves the valve shut. The latter results in slightly increased emmissions and decreased economy, but most consider this to be acceptable, and it is still within EU limits for emmissions.

There are loads of other potential causes, and the best thing to do before spending much money would be to get a garage to get the fault codes out of the computer. You see a light on the dashboard, but attached to the right kit the computer in your car will tell you exactly why it is upset (it has built in diagnostics).

Cheers clueless, I had same problem with my EGR valve on my laguna. I was advised not to bypass it so whip it out and clean it yearly. Used to always disconnected the breather hose on my old petrol vauxhalls as they dumped oily gunk in my carbs/injectors.
