Hi everyone my aunt gave me a pot of day lilies (I think that's what they are called) and I grew a pot of oriental lilies from bulbs myself and I was just wondering what I should do when the heads drop off & they finish flowering? My aunts are completely gone and mine are just about to open so I'd like to know what's best, cutting down the foilage or letting it die down itself? Many Thanks

Throughout last year, I'd bought quite a few pot lilies for my wife, when the flowers were finished I cut them back to an inch or two and then put them in a quiet corner of the garden.
I moved them into the shed during the winter and I then in the early spring removed them from the dry pots and found a place for them in the garden and put some in this planter.
Most have come up and these will put on a decent show soon. She wouldn't have any back in the house in case there were any "creepy-crawlies" in them. Some beetle damage but not much.

Lillies should be allowed to die down naturally just as any other kind of bulb, and a couple of feeds with tomato fertilizer while the leaves still look good will help to build up a good bulb for flowering next year.

I just let lilies die down the same way I would with daffodils.
Give them a feed the same way you would with daffodils.
I've always found them to be hardy - whether in the ground or in pots.
It's up to you how you want to grow them.

Thanks for the replies everyone, Alice I have a few in the ground as well do you think they'd be hardy enough to survive an Irish winter?

I love the pot on the right Doghouse Riley, it's beautiful!
