We have some Dhalias on a balcony that gets the morning sun, but is in shade during the afternoon.

The Bees love them, but we've noticed some strange behaviour over the last few days.

We can only describe it as the Bees falling asleep while getting pollen. They stay firmly attached though, as strong winds or shaking does not dislodge them. They stay there for hours, through the night, day, sun, shade, torrential rain. Other Bees even come and get pollen alongside the dormant one.

Then, as quickly as it starts, they seem to wake up and dissapear. Or possibly just fall asleep again. It's hard to keep track. For example, it's now nearly 1am, after a wet evening, and the three largest flowers each have a dormant Bee. They're not dead - there are definite signs of life, just not energetic ones.

What on earth is going on?

Hi Chingford pots, I have no idea! I have never noticed that behaviour before. Hopefully someone will know what is going on with the bees.

As far as I know bees reactions slow down in the cold (and I expect in the strong wind). Have you noticed this behaviour together with a change in the weather?

:thumb: Hi CFP, Yes you are right... Yes, bees are sleeping on your flowers. While females may return to the hive, males often prefer to pass the night on a blossom. Cosmos are a particular favorite of members of the Melissodes species. No male bee of any species has a stinger, so feel free to take a closer look!

:hehe:I wondered about that, Roders, as you definitely see p*ssed insects rolling around near fermented apples.
