We are having one of our phone lines taken out of the office and moving the internet connection to the main house line.
I tried this last night to see if the extention would reach and every time I plugged the line which will be from the computer into the phone socket the phone went off.
We still have both lines working at the moment.
The office for the internet and the other for the house phone.
The internet is still on the office line not yet changed.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Lyn
Sorry i can't help but i had exactly the same thing a few years ago. My friend couldn't believe that the phone was 'engaged' if i was on the net! I'm trying hard to think how it was resolved but i'm sure somebody else will tell you soon.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

    cheers

[IMG] Sounds to me like BT ( or whoever you are with) haven't switched it over properly yet. I would maybe check it out with them to make sure you don't have a period of time when you don't have broadband..! This happened to my daughter & instead of smooth change over it took an extra 5 days...!!!! Not good when it is your business as you will know.. That's all I can think of anyway... They haven't changed it over yet.
    Still waiting.
    I have been waiting ages.
They said I would be put on dial up if I had no broadband.
I'm fed up with AOL I have had loads of problems with them ,so I might just change back to BT.

The problem with the phone going off was a faulty DSL Filter.

:( Ssst Not AOL again... Sorry Lyn, but they seem to be nothing but trouble these days.. Why are they taking so long over it.?? There shouldn't really be any need for dial up at all in your case, but it shouldn't be for more than 24hrs...??
[IMG] Personally I can't fault Orange & their wireless broadband & phone deal.. Excellent Help desk & back up.... I know someone who gets on well with BT until they have a problem & their help desk falls down.. So I would be wary of that one.. Lots of deals to be had Lyn.. Have a shop around... [IMG]

    Hi Lyn & all,
I never hear anything good about AOL. A while ago i wrote on here that as soon as i got my pc's i took AOL off.

i had heard nothing but trouble about them & it doesn't seem to have improved.

Mind you, as has been said, it's one company taking over the over these days. can't go for any one cos of good service, cos then they're taking over!

I hope you get sorted soon.

    cheers

    useless fact

unless it is a cable company or a "wi fi" company they all use BT phone lines.

Which means you have to call tehm and they call BT

    Dave .
The problem with the phone going off was a faulty DSL Filter.

But over the week-end the whole thing (AOL) crashed I had nothing and had to re-install the software again.
    It seems O.K now.

High Kype - If your phone and internet connection are working ok,then you don't need to use DSL microfilters. We have two phones and two PCs plugged in, plus another PC connected via wireless and we've no micro filters on the phones because we've a thing called a DSL Splitter,at the point where our line enters the house, rather than separate filters on each phone or PC socket, If your system is running properly you possibly have one too.
The purpose of a DSL filter is to stop high frequency voice (your phone) and low frequency digital (your PC) signals from getting in the way of each other, since they both have to travel along the same line.

If you don't have either type of filter or (as in Lyn's case) one is broken you'll not be able to use your phone and PC at the same time.

    If it ain't broke - don't mend it ;) :D

Sorry Dave, but are you talking about DSL or ADSL.
DSL is cable lines whereas ADSL is the BT (or Kingston) Lines, where it is the normal telephone system. A splitter at the incoming point would be OK for a single phone and single computer, but if you wanted multiple points you would then have to install separate circuits for ADSL Broadband and Phone. Using filters you are effectively splitting at each outlet.

Good point Larkshall. Thanks, I've learned something new!
We must be ADSL here, as we use the original BT line for our BT Broadband.
I said that we've two phones, however they are both cordless and connect to just one line outlet. The two main PCs are connected by cable to a wireless router.

Well that seems to be in order. I have a wireless router which I normally use with ethernet cable, but we have a computer users meeting here once a month and they use the wireless connection. I have a cordless phone (which I use in the garden, it has a better range), a double DECT phone (with answering machine) and two line powered phones (you are required to have one for power failure).

Lyn's problem would seem to be BT, I used to work for BT but it's not the same. We had to answer calls within 15 seconds or answer for it. My office phone was one they couldn't issue to a customer as I listed 23 regular calls in error (wrong number or wrong code) one was a hotel in Bath (right number, wrong code).
