    Hi all,

I wonder if anyone could tell me how long I should expect a rose to bloom for before the petals start withering and falling off?

I don't seem to be getting more than a couple of days from fully opening to falling

    TIA

Hi newton, I think you are doing about right with the weather we have had.. I don't think any blooms are lasting so long this year, but roses are very thirsty & hungry plants so if you are not watering them & they are dry it would probably account for the short flowering period....
 Our real rose expert is Wiseoldowl so see what he says though when he pops in later... :thumb:

Hi Newtonuk If you can give me some more information ie
Age /name/location etc that would be most helpful:)

:)Rose petals fall off the rose within a few days of blooming. The purpose of the petals are to attract pollinators to the flower to pick up and deposit pollen, and once the rose has been pollinated, the petals are no longer necessary.

    Hi NewtonUk.
I think we are all having the same problem.
It has been just so hot and dry that the roses, and other flowers, are coming and going in a few days.
In cooler , damper conditions they would last much longer - weeks even.
Some of it is down to variety - especially as cut flowers.
Enjoy the weather - or the roses.

    Hi Woo,

So far I have a Super Trouper, Hot Chocolate, Oranges and Lemons and a Kathleen's Rose.

All are recently just in the ground and are in a border against my conservatory in a SSW facing garden.

They were all out of pots.

    HTH

Thanks all, I'll enjoy the roses whilst they're out and hope that they'll bloom again before the end of summer.

    Hi WOO

The Kathleen's Rose I have is actually called Kathleen's Rose rather than just Kathleen.

I've not been able to find it in many places other than here:

    http://www.roselocator.com/rose_locator/roses/floribunda_less_100cm/105_kathleens_rose.php

Kathleen is the name of my wife's mother, who has not been too well recently and I hope for it to be a gentle reminder of the good times that they have had together when she is not here anymore.

    Best regards

    Rob

    Thank you.

I only wish my Hot Chocolate looked as brown as that. At the moment they are very definitely red, albeit a deep red.

Hi Newtonuk .Its very difficult even when purchasing a Rose of any colour,as all the Images that you see in catalogues or the on a website have a slight variation in colour, and indeed even the position and soil where it is planted can make a difference.Good luck with your Roses and please keep me updated if you can, from time to time.:)

Oh well, that was even shorter lived than I thought it would be... I got home from a business trip and my toddler, who had watched me very carefully the week before, has pruned my roses for me. The only one that survived the culling was my Hot Chocolate.
