can anyone tell me why every 5 to 10 minutes or so i have this violation invasion notice popping up it says i have over 15 thousand yes 15 thousand violations on here and god knows where they have come from, mind you come to think of it they appeared since this disc cleaner thing appeared from out of know where, every time it comes up (hang on there it is again) i just click the x in the top corner. Is there anyway i can get rid of this problem or will i have to get someone in to have a look at it for me.

It might be an advert type thing, can you either type the words out for me or press the Prnt Scrn button next time it pops up then open paint (Start, Programs, Accessories,Paint) and hold down the Ctrl key and press V then save the image and load to photobucket so I can see what it looks like, it might give me an idea.

Do you have any kind of firewall or virus checker on you machine?

OK Sunshine, maybe PCMedic will pop along in the meantime and be familiar with it.

Could it be due to the auto MSN Messenger on some Windoze installations, you keep getting unsolicited messages, usually trying to get you to download something. Like spam only via IM instead of email.
I found out from this site

Some very useful hints and tips for sorting Windoze.

    Cheers MIKE

Get a "POP UP BLOCKER" I think XP security centre has one installed, just needs activating.

You are both right Fred and Mike, however it sounds to me as though a websound has already downloaded a little file that makes this window pop up, a pop up blocker will only stop new ones.

I think you need to get an "Internet Security" package (Norton and Mcaffee both do good ones), do you have anyone nearby who could check you don't already have one and help you to install one? You can download them from the websites or buy them from PC World.

definately an internet popup by the looks of it, try downloading a popup blocker, i have "smart popup blocker" which does the trick.

A good website to get software from is www.majorgeeks.com its got pretty much everything you'll ever need to protect/clean up your computer.

Hi, this is what I was trying to find at annoyances site, the screen shot looks similar to those I was getting which this stopped:

I found many other very useful tips and hints there too, like how to make Explorer or other programmes to open at the folder you want, not where Microsloth wants.

    Cheers MIKE

Sunshine P. You clearly have a virus - in its widest sense. ie Malware - its trying to sell you something by telling lies. No you don't have 14583 privacy violations. Unfortunately it has lodged itself in your system. My system is Windows 98 - because it is so easy to reformat my hard disk to remove such stuff. So I don't know the details of yours. The virus has to be invoked, when you switch on, and the usual suspects are the start up menu (check that you know everything that is in there), or a link thats embedded in the registry, that loads a malicious file from your hard disk, or from the internet. Once it has been loaded into your memory it will stay there until your machine is turned off. But it will be reinvoked next time your machine is switched on, unless you can find and remove the malicious file itself. Try deleting all your tempory internet files (not cookies) via internet explorer. Probably won't work as the malicious file will have been places in a normal working directory.

Try downloading Adaware http://www.adaware-antispyware.com/uk_adaware/ its free and is aimed more at the irritating end of the malware spectrum that the true viruses checkers.

If all else fails, you ought be able to get rid of it by a restore to a period before it was there. However thats always slightly dicey because you could lose some of your data unless you have taken copies of everything.

If it's very recent. There is one method that I often use, which is to search the hard disk for all files 'created' between two dates - one just before and one just after it appeared. Search specifically for *.exe and *.dll files. This sort of thing often comes in as an exe file but could come in various guises. Other than my virus checker I should not have any new .exe files created, unless I have installed new software. So I am always deeply suspicious of a new .exe file. But be very careful there may be genuine system files there. So if in doubt don't delete anything.
