    How do I uninstall Bearshare?

    -------------------------------------------------

In a moment of madness I installed Bearshare (to download music)
    which I now understand is a p2p.
As it seemed to take over my pc with icons everywhere I tried to uninstall.

I have tried all the usual methods - add/remove etc and Task Manager but no success.
Anybody know how to uninstall PLEASE!

I paid a £24 subscription too so think I have probably lost that

Anybody else had this problem and managed to uninstall?

    Hi jjordie
Add/remove should have taken care of the program.
Is it just the "fodder" that comes with bearshare that hasn`t uninstalled or everything?

check your firewall exceptions list and make sure you remove it from there too.If the program hasn`t been uninstalled you`ll still be getting incoming connections..swiping your bandwidth

Bearshare is notorious 'foistware'. That is, when you install the main program it foists a load of bundled nasties along with it.

Once you have uninstalled it do a full anti spyware and anti virus check on all your machine drives. Also check your Operating System (O/S) is fully patched and up to date.

You will probably have to do a major cleanup so use Trend Housecall and something else like Spybot Search and Destroy. Once the system is clean if you then install SpywareBlaster it will help prevent dross from getting access to your machine.

If you don't have AV and Firewall proggies on your PC then AVG and ZoneAlarm are pretty good, free and not invasive.

    Nasty P2P ;)
Probably a also good plan to use RegCleaner to remove all entries from the registry too

Thanks Hex and Frogesque - haven't heard of a p2p before this -
I shall be more careful what I download in future
(Grand-daughter said it was great for downloading music!)

Frogesque, I did a Spybot Search and Destroy and XoftSpyXE scan and
both have come up clear now and Bearshare
has also disappeared from Add/Remove Programmes. Thanks. [IMG]

    Hi jjordie
Glad you have it sorted out.

Don`t forget to wipe bearshare from your firewall exceptions list, otherwise you might be leaving a port open without realising it ;)

It really depends on which firewall you are using [IMG]

Most have a list showing which programs are "allowed" to make incoming or outgoing connections. You just have to make sure bearshare isn`t on that list.
Detailed instructions are most likely in the help section or manual included with your firewall software

P2P stands for Peer to Peer. It's a file transfer system used primarily for upload and down load of music and multi media files although it can be used for telephony systems such as SKYPE. Whilst P2P has its uses it's best avoided if you don't know what you are getting into or who you are downloading from. Instead of dedicated servers it uses any computer's power within a peer network - this could include that spotty geek up the road with an evil bent and his worldwide script kiddie friends.

Thanks - spotty geek access I do not need :D . Having scanned my fire walls automatic and custom access - there was nothing there that I didn't know - e.g. google, microsoft and norton.

I will be more careful now about such things. Thanks
