Can anyone explain to me in words of (almost) one syllable if I should have a dvd/vcr recorder that is M-peg compatable or not! I've read screens of stuff thrown up by Google and I'm none the wiser! There are two machines I'm checking out, both about the same config and price but one's M-peg compat and the other's not.

Depends if you download movies from your computer that are in mpeg format. If you are not downloading mpegs then you won't need a player to play them.

    Hi michaelmasdaisy,

Are you sure it doesn`t mean.. not "MP3" (audio file) compatible?
I guess it could be referring to MPeg 4 which is basically "DivX" (a compressed video format).

Dvd`s and SVCD`s are encoded in Mpeg-2 format.
VCD`s are encoded in Mpeg 1 format.

Most audio encoded to go with video is in either MP2,PCM or AC3.

All DVD players will play DVD`s, SVCD`s and VCD`s (MPeg 1 or MPeg 2) but some can`t play MP3`s as it`s an audio format and most standard players can`t play MPeg 4 ;)

A few more than one syllable but maybe it`ll help.

    Hi michaelmasdaisy,
After looking at the spec i`d take it to mean that it will recognise and play audio mp3`s ;)

If you do ermmm, download movies or borrow movies that someone else has downloaded <koff> you tend to find the cheaper DVD players are the best. I ditched my Sony in favour of a Ã?£30 Pacific from Asda, plays VCD, SVCD, DVD, MP3, MP4 and I'm sure if I threw a beermat in the drawer it would play it [IMG]
