HB it it helps - I back up docs and pictures to an an 80 gb Archos external hard drive. Whilst its in back up format, I also have other files and folders stored on it including my pictures - and its quite possible to work on these. It has its own power source, but the transfer is by USB.

Works for me, + a backup on a second internal hard drive - but I will also be storing some pictures on DVD

I've just checked Photobucket TOS and it looks as if I've been mistaken

"Photobucket.com reserves the right to terminate any account for non-use of longer than 90 days."

I was under the impression that images were only held for 90 days for all users. I've been to other forums as well as GC where pages are littered with Photobucket notices saying the image has been removed. I've never used them myself so sorry if I've caused confusion.

When you see the notices about images having been removed, it is the user who has done this rather than PB. Unless you pay for a Professional account, there is a limit on the number of pictures one can store on PB. I regularly remove the oldest album to make room for new.

I have just looked at my details on Photobucket. I have the free service and am allowed 1GB. So far I have 192 pictures uploaded and this has taken 0.01GB or 1.08% of my allowable space.

I am allowed 10GB of bandwidth per month ?????? and have used none.

This thread has been very informative for me,and i'm sure for many others.
With many of us collecting more and more pictures and building quite a library, there is definitely a need for some serious thought...
    Thanks ALL. [IMG] [IMG]

It's quite sad, on a lot of forums if you look back a lot of pictures have been removed as people update their albums. I don't know if any of our computer experts can think of a solution- for a gardening site it's particularly important. I have no idea how much space Nathan is allowed, or if there could be some kind of holding space on GC.

I have 1060 pictures on PB and that is about 9%. Again the Bandwidth usage is less than 1%. They have increased the amount of storage given recently, so the need to remove pictures is less now.
Allotments4All allow paying customers to upload photos directly to the site, so they remain available at all times.

GC does not hold any of the photographs themselves ... they are imported from whichever service .. Photobucket, imageshack, etc ... and therefore, as you rightly say, if the originating photo person removes their image from their photo provider, it will disappear from GC.

I know when pics disappear it's the person doing it, updating, removing or whatever. I made the mistake myself last month trying to organise folders within Photobucket ... flowers, cats, house, etc ... moved them into their respective new folders and suddenly my pictures dissapeared on GC. A hard lesson learned ... I had to go back and put everything where I had it in the first place.

So, if any of us leave GC and stop using our photo provider service, GC will have lots of blanks, particularly in the new Photo Gallery!

    Does this make any sense?

Does this apply to the photo gallery? I thought once they had been recorded by Nathan GC had a permanent record- that's why I was wondering if something similar could be arranged for all pictures. [IMG]

I have a feeling that he has already covered it, but hoping somebody might remember where it was? ;)

I'm confused now... I just took a look at the Gallery and saw that whilst people have posted lots of pictures, Nathan has deleated them (as he says) once they are uploaded to his hard drive. There's no link left so what't the point?
