Me again!! And just an info query this time.

Using DUC, I generally get a speed of 45.2kbps but sometimes it's 44.0kbps. Strange things is, very often it goes quicker with the slower speed than the faster one! Why is this?

average dialup connection is round about 44kb to 52kb.......your connection speed at 44 and 45kb is very good mate......it means that the "gain" noise level on your phone line is minimal.....when people have connection speeds on a 56k modem of below 44kb ie: 33 or 28kb's then its the noise level on the phone that is causing the modem to sync with the server at those speeds........so the answer to your question is.........line very good....download depends on people connected to the server.

    hope this helps mate.

When I had dial up I had a little program, with an icon of two tiny computers linked together, that indicated the connection speed, but also showed, when you had a blank screen, when data was being downloaded and when it wasn't. I am now on broadband and have lost that program. Is it or an equivalent freeware utility available anywhere.

Good point, PeterS. I'm not yet on BB but hope to be sometime. I've just seen that Sky are soon going to offer their existing customers a free BB link but with a download limit of 2mg (sorry, that should be 2mB!! It's the nurse in me!!!). Trouble is, I have no idea what this represents in terms of my usual activity. I don't DL music or vids or games and such but I do spend anything from 3-6 hours a day on-line. How does one know how much you need??

MD I have 2.2 Mbps and it flies. Will be getting 8mb soon because of my phone contract. BB is a must if you spend 3-6 hours on the internet  I leave it on all day for email and of course GC but I only check it if I am passing. I LOOOOOOOOVE BB just so fast and if sky don't sort you out there are loads of easy install BB providers out there.

PeterS: You should have an icon - bottom right on task bar showing connection (that should have come with your installation), click on it and that should give you what you are after! ;)

Go to start........ my network places.

In network tasks down left column go to.......veiw network connections.

look for your broadband connection icon and right click on it and go to properties.

At the bottom you will see.....show icon in notification area when connected....tick that box and click ok.

PC Medic - many thanks for answering my question. Unfortunately I am on windows 98 and I cannot find a connection icon your way, or any other way. The only icon I can find is the cable modem icon in Device Manager. But the properties won't allow me to do what you suggested.

I am off on holiday for 10 days or so tomorrow - perhaps I can come back to you when I return. But thanks for your effort.

I'm jealous of all of you on BB. I can't get it where I am. I have difficulty going on to some topics if there are a lot of photos because my transfer rate is so slow that it can take over quarter of an hour just to get the page up. It doesn't take so long to upload my photos because I do them one at a time and don't usually do more than 2 at any one topic - This can still take me 10-15 minutes to load into Photbucket, edit and paste.

You don't have to be jealous of me, Shiney, as I'm on broadband and I have similar problems to you ... not quite as slow as you, though, sometimes 30-45 seconds, other times a few minutes. I have no problem with Photobucket; only have this problem on UBB sites it appears!
