Frogspawn 08

A couple of weeks ago I thougt the frogs had all deserted me, then last night there was movement, no noise as there usually is at this time of the year.
This morning there was this.

 

Looks like they have been busy Pete,though it is the time for them to get the spawn laid.Just hope the weather doesn't turn too nasty.Not sure if the spawn can survive being frozen :rolleyes:

Great pic, pete, and is that watercress in the pond too? If yes, does it stay in the pond all year round or is it new?

No sight of ours yet, although I did see one frog in the veggie patch this morning.

No sign of mine yet......Plenty of copulating frogs.You are further south than we are.
Two or three more weeks me thinks.

 

There is no croaking, like there has always been, this year, it strangely quiet. But there a loads of em all over now, they really were hiding well this year.

I managed to get within 3ft to take the pic Dee, they are not easily scared, and Kedi that id watercress (well spotted) it stays there all year, gives the fish some cover in winter if there is a heron about.

Spawn cant survive being frozen Kandy, it was frozen last year, but usually masses of it survive under the water.
Nature has ways of surviving.

 

No sign here either.
But we did have a frost Sunday night.
They are clever lttle things , must be hanging on for warmer weather.
We are a good bit north of you.

 

I have had frogspawn middle of January before now, but this year seems to be very quiet of frogs..BUT.. I now have some spawn in my ponds back and front garden.Not much frog noise though..even though I am wildlife friendly in the garden.. but the frogs seem to be in short supply, but obviously there must have been at least one of each sex here on a visit thank goodness. Just a mention that going into Autumn last year I still had tadpoles in my small pond.. they didn't seem to want to change for some reason. Did anyone else find this I wonder????

 

Well - we did have a little frogspawn several days ago, but it was laid/ spawned on the coldest night of the winter so far, and the pond actually got iced up and the frogspawn disappeared!!! A friend had far too much spawn and passed some onto us which was left in a bucket in the greenhouse until the icy weather passed, but the boys begged and begged me...... so we now have a fishtank full of Tiny taddies in the kitchen!!!! Do I make a rod for my own back or what......

 

Pete - is watercress a good plant to have in the pond? If so, can you just bung in some stuff from Sainsburys???? (and is it still edible if it grows?) (sorry if I sound a real numpty...)

 

HB, Mine came from a farm shop, I found the supermarkets tend to just sell the leaves mostly, stripped from their stems.
The stems root in about three days in spring just thrown in the pond.
Then all you need to do is thin it out now and then.
I grow it in an attempt to use up all the nitrates in the water, I find its very fast growing and easy to reduce when I need to.
I dont think it advisable to eat it, but I bet some people do.
