'Farne' tastic place

Thanks for all your comments, I was surprised that they came out so well as I have no tripod and some were taken on the boat. I just had to snap away and hope I had some good ones.
It is good to be able to share them with so many people.

 

The third photo in your first post is wonderful but I also love the next one of the two shags (courting?).

I thought the name rang a bell, I'm an East Coast girl - Edinburgh, East Lothian and now Berwickshire (with a spell in Western Australia to be different!). Without consulting the mapbook I must be pretty close so I am definitely planning a trip based on your photo's.

Wonderful pictures Strongy - the puffins are glorious, the terns wonderful, and the black headed gulls and their different coloured chicks- super.

With shots like these this a place I need to visit.

Our trip was an all day (6hr) bird watching one and you are left on two islands for two hours each, the others only visit one. We were very lucky to see so many Puffins as they will be off in the next two weeks or so.
The boats run from Seahouses for about nine months of the year, we had a sunny day (the only one last week) and calm sea, just as well as neither of us have sea legs.
Thanks to the GC members who recommended places to visit, we got to most of them.

 

Here's another one for Kathy3, a pair of Ringed Plovers on the rocks to go with the Puffins, sorry no Fulmars or Dunlin there. :(

Kathy, I have only had the camera three months and I am still trying to get to grips with it.
Most of the birds and seals were taken at 12x zoom which is a fixed lens and only protrudes two inches from the body so no bulky equipment to carry around.

I love puffins, but have NEVER see one, and the seals are soooooooooo sweet!!

 

Comer gardener and HB, it is a Panasonic Lumix FZ7 6 Megapixel 12x zoom, it is a bridge camera i.e inbetween a normal point and shoot digital and a digital SLR.I bought it on ebay and it came with a 2 gigabyte memory card. It only uses a single lithium battery not standard AA batteries. I also bought a new spare battery on ebay half price.
Although the camera has 12x optical zoom at 6 meg, it can go up to 16x optical but the megapixels are reduced to 3, nearly all the pics I took of the birds and seals were 16x and are sharp but may not be if you were to enlarge them.
As I am only having them developed on 6x4in standard postcard size they will be fine for me.
I took a lot of pics as I didn't have the time to review every one immediately but taking birds in flight was impossible.

I am really impressed by those photos being a bit of a bird fan. I always thought you needed to digiscope (camera +telescope) to get such good quality, but your photos are so detailed. My camera is bit dated now at about 3 year old - great for close ups, but useless if anything moves. May I ask how's yours for close ups?

 

strongy may go on sunday iff the weather stays nice, hope the puffins are still there, although i have driven that way many times to seahouses, bamburgh castle i have never been to the farne islands and was very impressed when i saw your pictures

 

Hi Comer, close ups are not as easy and this is where it differs from SLRs, you have to put it on close up mode and max zoom and stand a metre or two away adjusting the zoom as required for sharp focus. I have not tried it often enough to say whether it is a good or bad part of the camera, time and more experimenting will tell.
