I've just had a Goldcrest spend a lot of today playing around outside my office window. It has been hopping about like mad on a rose branch just a couple of inches from my window. I think it is nesting in the tree 3 ft away. It was very difficult to photograph because it didn't keep still for more than a second at a time.

I wasn't sure what it was so I went on the RSPB website and they have a search page that links to phots of each bird and you can play their birdsong. It's a great link.

The goldcrest is Europe's smallest bird so I've put a photo on this month's competition as the theme is 'All things Great and Small'. The close up picture I entered is slightly hazy bevause of the window and the poor resolution on zoom.

Here are some other pics I took. It is tiny but fascinating.

Very good shiney! I've never seen a goldcrest before and actually didn't know it. He sure was a lively little chap to have kept you snapping away like that. These, and the one in the April competition, are super. Thanks for perservering and letting us share them with you.

He popped back a little while ago. I'm pretty sure he must be nesting in one of the conifers near the window so maybe we'll see a lot more of him. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
