I have just been outside to rescue our resident Garden Frog from our two cats.I found him being played with last year in our garden by them so took him to our duck pond and released him.He came back and overwintered in my wheel barrow full of Iris's.

I found him the other night in the garden,so he must like us even though we have no pond.

I was standing at the kitchen sink this morning when I saw my two cats playing on the lawn with something. On further investigation it was Mr Frog fleeing from their claws and omitting a very shrill squeal like that of a baby bird. This is something I didn't realise they did.It must be part of their defence mechanism.I thought they just went "croak"
I have put him back in the wheelbarrow and hope they don't get their claws in him...

Yes they do squeal, which can be quite disconcerting, they also play dead and lie on their backs.

Cats are lovely but they do play with frogs and birds.

Before I had my cats I had a bird table, it was fascinating to watch all the different kinds of birds that would come and feed, but now because one of mine is a bird killer  I have had to take away the bird table and stop feeding them which is a shame but I don't want to tempt any birds to their deaths.

Carrying on from this, does anyone know of a bird, perhaps an owl, that squeals/yelps! I hear this in the wee hours of the morning coming from somewhere in the orchard. We do have screech owls here but this is different.

For a long time I thought it was a puppy but the puppy would have grown up by now!

Don't think we have foxes here. Besides, it's been going on too long to be a fox with cubs.

Oh, yes, Owls do Sqeal, BIG TIME - as we found out when we went camping recently. There was a tree right by out tent which, as we found out, was the local meeting point for these Bl**dy owls. Screech, screech, screech - then twit - twooooo. Screech, screech... you get the idea!!!! Mini HBjr tore into our bedroom area, tried to leap in bed with me - scared the living daylights out of him (the owl, not me in my nightie!!!!!). By the fourth night, the whole tent would hurl abuse at them when they started....!!!!!! [IMG] (and the odd wellie)

Honey Bee It was a Tawny Owl you heard.Such beautiful birds.
You won't realise this but the tree where they roost was probably there long before there was a campsite...No Offence meant to you or your family

Thanks for the link, Honey Bee. Unfortuately I can't listen to it as I haven't got XP. Won't have that till next month so will have to come back to this. I had wondered if it was an owl.

What a nightmare camping trip ... you probably had to go home to get some rest! [IMG]

LOL - It was a fantastic trip - apart from the owls and the boys minds playing tricks on them - ie no loo - therefore they needed to go 3 or 4 times in the night...... needless to say, we had a well used bush - right by the tree where the owls met...... !!!!! :D :D :D
Kandyfloss - quite agree they are beautiful birds, and we were so excited when they first let us know they were there...... but the novelty wore off after the first night!!!!! [IMG] [IMG]

LOL - I'd hazard a guess it was a vixen, the right time of year for her to be calling. The deer also are in rut, and I often hear them in in the evening etc. Though I would not call their calling similar to a yelp. :D

Hi, Fran. Thanks for your views. I do appreciate what you say. I live in the middle of orchards where "no hunting" is permitted. I will say again, we do not have foxes here
