I've always loved lupins - and for their scent as much as anything else.
This year (i'm in a new garden, 2 years old, getting on very well) the lupins I have have been disappointing in terms of show and absolutely scentless.
I like my garden to smell like Paradise, and choose varieties for show and scent.
I'm prepared to howk out the lupins I have. They don't do it for me.
Can anybody recommend anything which comes all one colour and is scented as well
or should I just go back to good old fashioned Russel Lupins, enjoy the scent and settle for mixed colours.
I know we have Lupin experts on here so look forward to replies.

Alice, I love Lupins - but wasn't even aware of their scent. So I can't really help you.

However when I Googles 'scented lupins', most of the references came up with Tree Lupins - Lupinus arboreous. And Chilterns sell a scented blue flowered L. arboreous.

On a slightly different tack, one of the references was this http://www.karisgarden.com/chapters/scent.htm which is all about scented plants, including tree Lupins.

Thank you PeterS. I'll follow your useful links.
I have to say I'm amazed. Ordinary Russel Lupins always had the most heady, spicy scent which permeated the garden. I hope they haven't bred the scent out of them in the quest for perfection.

I've grown Lupins from seed and baby plants for years and never noticed a scent.

Maybe it's something you are attuned to, more than others Alice?

Have not come across many well scented early herbaceous plants ( or late ones for that matter ) much richer scents can be found in the annual stocks/sweet peas and nicotiana, etc.. I confess that like others I have not found much scent in the Lupins I grow - maybe the older Russel varieties are better.
One plant you might try Alice is the 'Sweet Rocket' not sure of its proper name but mine reliably produce a heady scent, colour white.

Thank you Barnaby. I don't know that plant but I'll seek out information on it.

Hi Sussexgardener, no I'm not havering yet :D Well, I don't think so :old:
If you look at the link above from PeterS under scented flowers (sorry I can't do it myself) you will find Karli talks about the wonderful scent of Lupins. I fear the scent has been bred out in favour of other things - just like scentless roses.

But as an aside Sussexgardener - I don't think the scent of lupins is something I was attuned to, but there are some things only 30% of the population can smell - and they're stinks ! If the subject interests you have a google for it.

    Hi Alice
At the nursery where I work, we've only grown a few varieties of lupin, but the only one that has had any detectable scent is the white from the Russell Hybrid mixture- and I'm sure I've read that Noble Maiden ( a white one) is scented.

    Thank you Hognose.
I've been googling Lupins all over the place and am finding a few varieties that mention the scent - and a lot of other things about them that I didn't know.
Well, every day's a school day on here.
