My gardening skills are very basic!

I would be grateful if someone would identify this plant:

    Hi Patrick,

    Welcome to GC.

I'm not sure about your plant but it looks a bit like a nut tree to me.

Someone is bound to identify it for you soon. :thumb:

Is it a beech tree? Do you have beech trees near you? They seed very readily.

I agree with Rhyleysgranny, looks very much like a Beech seedling. if you don't want a large tree growing there dig it up while you can.

Thank you all for your suggestions so far.

I will add a bit more info.

This plant was introduced to the garden some years ago by a gardener who did a lot of work in the garden.

I found the following label on the plant:

As you can see it is very hard to make out the writing on the label.

If it is a beech tree I will certainly remove it because I don't want a tree where it is.

In truth I think that in the years it has been there it has only grown about one foot !

Thank you all for your help. Shiney has better eyesight than me!

I now know why the plant doesn't grow. It is in a place of permanent shade and according to that BBC plant finder record it needs to be in the sun. I think I know a good place for it so I will move it there.

I see that the plant doesn't like blustery wind which could be a problem as my garden gets blustery wind all winter.
