Back in the summer I posted a thread about a semi-feral cat which I had begun to look after.
Although he has occasionally put paw over my threshold he hasn't shown much desire to stay so spends most of his time in a blanketed kennel under my garden window.
I provisionally named him Minstrel (because he's black and white) but am thinking that I ought to call him Falstaff because, at the moment, he's eating me out of house and home - three packets of cat food per day plus any s****s that are going.
As he was such a poor, skinny thing when he first arrived I don't stint his food, but I'm wondering if this sort of appetite is normal. It seems to have increased with the (slightly) colder weather. I gave him worming tablets a few months ago so don't think he has any problems with worms. [IMG]

Hi, Jack! Very odd that deletion!

Onto Minstrel. I find that my cats have always eaten considerably more as the weather gets colder and consequently put on weight. On the contrary, as the weather gets hotter they eat very little and lose weight.

Are they 100g packs? If so, that's not terribly unusual. Reading the back of my whiskas back it says that for a cat about 4 kilos they should eat 3 packets plus 20g of dry food OR 2 packets plus 40g of dry food OR 1 packets plus 60g of dry food. I have always given mine both. I find it more economical to buy tinned food thatn packets ... I only bought the whiskas as it had 60c off per packet (42p). Normally it is 1,69 Euros but the 400g tinned is under a Euro. Fortunately mine are all happy to eat cheap brands!

They also eat those things that we can type for fear of recrimination or incarceration several times a day ... and not just "morsel" portion! :D

No rude at all, just a word filter. I think the ar5e is taken out of some words too  I think some cats will eat all thats given to them. My parents cat is huge because he wanders round all the neighbours begging for food and then gets his meal at home too. Feed him normal portions and see if it makes a diffence. You might find your not the only person to pamper him :D

I'll drop my Mrs Slocombe mode to say thanks for the replies.
Yes, the packs are 100g, so I'm quite reassured that he's not over-eating.
Unfortunately, although he's got an appetite it's not for the cheaper canned foods that I fed him on when he first appeared and I found that it was cheaper in the long run to buy the dearer packets as I was having to throw the food he left away!

Try dried food - Tom is very happy with that, although he came to us, being used to tinned food only. I found that such a hassle, and so much waste packaging, (and I'm a veggie....), so dried complete food was best. He supplements this with the odd small bird and rodent..... leaving the less tasty bits and shrews for us to deal with - thanks Tom! :D

Have tried mixing it with the packets of moist food, dendrobium, but he sorts it out and discards it. I think a lack of teeth might be part of the problem!
I understand that a cat can't exist on a diet that doesn't contain meat products and will become very ill if these are withheld.

Dried food is just dried meat - I would never try to make an animal vegetarian! That would be cruel - although I believe there ARE such foods....

for my twopenneth cats by nature are meat eaters and as such should not be fed dried food, this is unnatural to them they digest the dried food then they drink copious amounts of water which then extends the stomach, this in turn produces various problems also fish is not one of there favorite diets,if you study your cat what does it kill birds, moles, rabbits etc all warm meat, this i might add applies to dogs
