Hi everybody. I'm new (!) I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for making raised beds in my son's nursery "eco-garden". We've thought about using old tractor tyres or rustic logs - any other cheap/eco-friendly suggestions???

My Father in Law had raised beds made with old railway sleepers.Don't know if you can still get them J

 

Hi Keg, welcome to the forum. Freecycle is usually a good place to look out for unwanted timber although at this time of year gardeners are thinking about building/maintaining raised beds so there is a lot of competiton. Ex scaffold boards if you can get them are really good, ring up your local scaffolder firms. Any spare bricks?. They make excellent permenant beds.Palletts are ok but only last about two years, they will last longer if you line them with plastic sheeting on the inside.There's a few ideas to be going on with, best of luck.

 

Welcome to the forum Keg, if you use railway sleepers use new ones they are pressure treated and not treated with creosote this is harmful and severe restrictions are in place for its use,the new ones are more costly but much safer.
