I'm hoping someone out there can give me some advice. I decided this year to plant some hardy perrenials in the garden but they did not come with any instructions as to what I should do with them for the winter. I don't know whether to cut them down to the ground , leave them or cut them to a certain height or what. There are Penstemon Blue, Diascia, Geraniums, Fuschias and Iris. Can anyone help?

Hi Kerina and welcome, the Penstemon should be evergreen but if it gets cut down by frost it will come back next year with the others the Iris is perennial but the Diascia, Geranium and Fuchsia may be tender perennials, do you know the varieties you have?

Hi Kerina welcome to our friendly forum I'm sure you will enjoy your stay.

You will be pleased to know most perennials will look after theirselves with little trouble although if you are new to gardening watching a plant die back in winter can be a little scary as you're thinking to yourself 'Oh my goodness I think I've killed it' or words to that affect!

I'm sure someone on here will be able to put your mind at rest as there are plenty of green fingered people knocking about....Mine's kinda yellowy at the moment so not yet full of wisdom in all things gardening. :D
