Hello I am fairly new to gardening and very new to this forum, it may take a while to find my way around. My Garden is fairly big but mainly grass, every year I spend a fortune on bedding plants for the box's and hanging baskets so I have repaired my old greenhouse and fitted lots of usefull shelves. So whats next? should I grow seeds in seed box's and pick out when ready or should I sow seeds directly into the little individual type trays, and what about taking cuttings from plants like geraniums also is it possible to use anything from this years bedding plants. How's that for a list? any advice will be appreciated.

Hi Dixon. I'm a newbie myself to the forum. But I guarantee you are in the right place for knowledgeable friendly people. They even talk to us Yorkies. (And what they don't know they'll make up) - LOL.

    Hi Dixon,

And a very warm welcome

If you want any seeds check out my exchange post (it's just me giving away loads of seeds [IMG] ) but you can exchange on there also.

Sarraceniac is quite right, I am quite a newby but everyone is so friendly and i am please to say i now grow more than I kill :D

I tend to buy the little 'pre-pots' as i call them 'cos you can put them straight into the ground but i also have a propagator and individual seed trays but its entirely up to you. Peat plugs come in useful as well. If you need any let me know i have LOADS [IMG]

If you put a post in beginners garden development about the geraniums you will get the anwer to your prayers [IMG]

    Welcome once again

Hi Dixon and welcome from me too.

We take our geraniums into the Wintergarten every year in October, before the first frosts. We trim them back by a good half first, and again in the spring if they get lanky.

Well you certainly are a friendly lot, what a great number of replies, one thing I did notice is that (may lose some friends here) most of you new that Dixon of Dock Green was a policeman "evening all" I can only assume that your Grand-parents must have told you as did mine. Ho Ho, thanks very much I intend to ask for much more advice in the future.

    Welcome Dixon, enjoy the site.
Most plants grown from seed are better off being sown in individual cells but only if space is not a problem, that naturally depends on the amount you are growing.
Geraniums can be increased from cuttings in the autumn(late sept/early oct) but over wintering them in an unheated greenhouse is risky, is yours heated? [IMG]

Hi there Dixon and welcome to G.C. You will get lots of good advice so don't be shy to ask. Don't ask me though - I'm very unknowlegeable when it comes to plants. But, I love weeding - isn't that sad.

Unfortunately, seed trays over here are very expensive so I spend the whole time saving yoghurt pots and those dreadful polywhatsit containers that meat comes in then use them for seeds. I'm also saving all my old loo rolls because I read somewhere that you could put big seeds in them, like sweet peas, and then just put the whole thing in the ground when the plant has grown a bit and the seedling doesn't get disturbed. Now isn't that clever [IMG]
