Hello from Wales.Hope this is in the right place!
I'm really glad I found this site, I'm hoping the information and tips all you lovely folk will provide will help get me get my dream garden. I've been off work with stress and my previously much neglected garden has proved to be my salvation. In fact I've just acquired 4 old victorian chimney pots that need re painting.. any tips on how to do this and make them look aged would really be appreciated.
    Thanks.. Nelly M.

Hello and welcome. Gardening is the bes stress reliever there is - puts everything into perspective.

Envy you your Victorian chimney pots - but why are you considering repainting. Why not strip them to the original, and leave them "au natural". That rich red, can be planted to complement and contrast.

Hi Nelly Moser welcome to the forums I'm sure you will have a very nice time with us here! :D

Regarding your chimney pots I have some but sadly mine are not victorian ones, a couple of years ago I painted mine blue and glued some gems on them.

The pots are ready for a repaint I think I will repaint them and put some mosaic tiles on them too, I know some people will scream with horror but I like to be different.

    Good luck with them. [IMG]

Hi Nelly Moser and a warm welcome from me too.

I agree with Fran and walnut about leaving your Victorian chimney pots natural after stripping the old paint off. If you can get some old/new ones, it would be interesting to try out Helen's methods too. Good luck whatever you decide on.

my favourite clematis,if you want to age your chimneys quickly, i heard coating them with natural yogurt helps,i think maybe the slugs may like that though, welcome to GC [IMG]

Hi Nelly M..You could even try Cow manure!..We dilute it a little and use it to mellow new render and stone work..

    Hi Fran,
Thanks for that. My chimney pots are not red they are a dirty beige colour so perhaps I am mistaken - maybe they are not victorian. I still love them though! perhaps I should paint them in old fashioned terracotta.

    Hi Nelly Moser,

A warm welcome from down south  it's a heat wave :D

Hubby say's if you want to you can use masonry paint, not as smelly as Nick's suggestion but not sure the end result will be as effective :D

Personally I think it would be a shame to use masonry paint, once it's on it's on [IMG]

My Welsh family come from Mid Glamorgan so a warm hi form Maesteg too :D
