complete beginner

hello all!
Im a complete beginner! I am new to this board and new to gardening! And wouldnt know the difference between weeds and plants most of the time! However I have for the first time decided to take on a new years resolution and that is to build myself a container garden full of organic edibles! I have received a few books from friends and family for my birthday regarding container gardening but any tips/recommendations and general advice will be most welcome!!

From the little I have figured out so far, I have a north facing mid terrace garden with this winter no sun except on the big hedge at the bottom of garden during the afternoon! Having only lived here since the winter I dont know yet how much sun I get in the summer! and euh... thats it!!

so where do I start?!!

Hi, Frenchflower - you've done the first tihng - you've come here! The best move you could possible have made! :D

Having been given some books, now is a good time to read them, becasue the weather is so lousy you won't be able to do much outside...... :rolleyes: I have loads of books, and oads of them are still largely unread...

If I were you, I'd first write down what plants I like, and what I want to grow, then look up the books, web, and ask us, if they'll suit your circumstances, then launch into it! Next month is probably best for getting the ground prepared - the soil is likely to be very wet at the moment, and if you're working with containers, then they're prone to freezing, but after February is oer they'll be less at risk. Feb tends to be really cold here these days, and I always think that once it's over, the worst of the frost is too.

Once you know what you want to grow - ask anything you want - I'm sure that there will always be someone who knows theanswer - we're all very helpful here! :D

Thanks to every one for your warm welcoming messages! Snow here today, so have settled in with a cup of T and gardening books and whilst baby is sleeping will try and educate myself and get some ideas for my garden project (thx dendrobium!)
